Frank Frazetta was born on February 28, 1928 and showed high artistic skills at an early age. By the age of six he was creating his own comic books drawn in coloured pencil, with original characters. At the age of eight he was enrolled by his parents in the Brooklyn Academy of Fine Arts. Highly athletic as well as artistic, the artist was offered a position during his teens on the farm squad of the New York Giants professional baseball team. Faced with the prospect of making little money and moving to a different state, he turned down the offer.
When he was 15 he was introduced to John Giunta, a professional artist working on Bernard Bailey comics. Giunta persuaded his boss to briefly run one of the young artist's creations, and the artist's career in comics began. By around 1953 he was working on the Li' l Abner newspaper comic strip. After a lull in his career in the early '60's he began working on paperback covers, starting with Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'Tarzan' books. This led to a back cover for 'Mad' magazine, a caricature of Ringo Starr, which in turn led to a United Artists Film Studios commission for a 'What's New Pussy Cat' movie poster. More book covers followed in the '60's and '70's, notably for Robert E. Howard's 'Conan' series, and later the artist became famous for his movie posters too. A museum of the artist's work was opened in Pennsylvania in 1985.

'Egyptian Queen' (far left) was painted in an amazing day and a half, but the artist then spent three days or more concentrating on getting the face right. 'Sea Witch' (left) was first printed (in an earlier version) on the cover of 'Eerie, and is considered a classic of contemporary fantasy art. |
